The challenge
Researchers, especially in smaller academic communities, need a credible place to publish and share their work openly. The Gufo had grown from a simple website into a full portal, and it needed the workflows and standards that serious research requires.
That meant real editorial roles, permanent citations, licensing, integrity checks and a structure that can grow into indexed journals.
What we built
- Brand identityThe owl wordmark and visual system, designed by our team.
- Two kinds of articlesArticles published with The Gufo, and already-published open-access articles shared under Creative Commons.
- Editorial workflowSubmission forms, editor assignment, and separate channels between author, editor and admin, with online payment for publishing fees.
- DOIs and licensingA Crossref DOI and a Creative Commons license on every published article, and a platform built to meet indexing requirements as its journals launch.
- Research integrityIntegrity checks built into the editorial workflow, before anything is published.
- Library and searchBrowse by field, or search by title, author, DOI or ISSN.

The result
The rebuilt portal went live on September 30, 2026, with a library of more than 2,500 open-access articles. We continue to run its platform and marketing.
